Black Mountain
Big Black Mountain is the highest point in Kentucky at 4,145 feet. Located on Hwy 160 on the Virginia - Kentucky line. The home of Black Bear, Wild Turkey, deer, and other wild animals. It is the location of the AVS Aviation tower.

Opened in 1994.The museum is located in the 3 story former International Harvester commissary in Benham. Exhibits include historic mining tools and equipment, home and town displays, a mock coal mine, photography collections, and natural history items. Also exhibited are items relating to local history and Loretta Lynn.

Portal 31 underground coal mine tour is complete with a rail ride on a man-transport vehicle. During the trip through the historic exhibits, visitors encounter animation figures rear screen projection, and an amazing audio-visual finale. This exhibit opened in the year 2009.

Coal Miners Memorial Theater

The Theater can be rented out for different activities through the City of Benham. It was originally opened as a theater around 1910. The building later became a youth center, and just recently was transformed back into a theater again.

The L & N Train Station in Lynch is an example of an early 19 th Century train station (depot) design. It represents the greater history of the coal industry that demanded its construction and its necessity to ensure transportation of both people and resources into and from this rural area. The building has been faithfully renovated and is joined on a large former train yard by an old locomotive and caboose.

The 8th annual Kentucky Black Bear Festival, located indowntown Cumberland, KY. You can enjoy rides, games, festival foods, vendors, car show, pet zoo, big stage where we have bands, dancers, and storytellers for both days.
The Kentucky Black Bear Festival is in celebration of the return of the Black Bear to our area. We try to focus on the education of living with the bears and safety.We also educate on the many different types of animals that live in these beautiful mountains. Come discover the fun in the Black Bear capital of Kentucky..Cumberland.

Crawdad was started in 2008. The Festival is held twice a year, in the spring and around Halloween.It is a student ran arts & music (all inclusive) festival. It exhibits student art work such as photography, sculpture, etc. Local musicians of all genres can be heard throughout the event. Free shirts are given away, as well as pizza and drinks. New features are added each year. The event also hosts a venue for students/community members to sale crafts and other goods.

Homegrown vegetables, country crafts, and delicious baked goods fill the tables as blue ribbons are anxiously sought during this long-time Harlan County Fair. It also serves as a time for Pine Mountain residents, plus others, to gather and celebrate summer's end. The event takes place every second Saturday in September.

The flora and fauna of Black Mountain, the state's highest peak, is the theme of this weekend, which was started to offer outdoor lovers the opportunity to explore and learn more about the biology of this tall mountain range. This event takes place the first weekend in May every year.

The spectacular colors of the fall season can be enjoyed during this weekend, hosted on the settlement school's campus, which is nestled just below the north ridge of Pine Mountain. Autumn hikes and photography workshops are also offered during this over-night getaway. This event takes place the third weekend in October every year.

The story of Christ's birth is portrayed in the sacred auditorium of Pine Mountain Settlement School's historic chapel by local community members who have been putting on the play for many years. The play, which was started decades ago by settlement school students, continues to draw hundreds of visitors throughout the state to see this humble, yet heartfelt production. The play takes place either the second or third Sunday in December.

A celebration of spring is held at this historic site where hikes are featured along with nature lectures, photography slide shows, and fellowship among nature enthusiasts who enjoy the beauty of flowers. This event takes place in mid-April.

 

 

 

 

Harlan County Fair and Shriners Horse Show
Putney, KY
For several years, local Shriners have hosted the annual Harlan County event with proceeds going to help the state's injured or sick children. Horsemen come from all around to showcase their rides and plenty of fun and money is generated during this two-day event. Crafters and gardeners of all ages also compete for blue ribbons at the Harlan County Fair, which is set up next to the horse ring. It is organized the first weekend of August every year by the Harlan County Extension Office.
